Duluth police identify victim of fatal stabbing
Update: In a release sent on Saturday morning, the Duluth Police Department identified the victim of Friday’s stabbing as Duluth resident Chantel Moose, 25. The Duluth Police Department also said they are continuing to investigate the incident and offer their condolences to Chantel Moose’s family and friends.
DPD said that on Friday, their Tactical Response Team and Drone Unit executed a search warrant at Kingsley Heights for a person of interest. A subject was later located and interviewed. Authorities believe that this was an isolated incident and the that the parties know each other. This is still an active and ongoing investigation.
Original story: An active investigation is underway in Duluth. According to Duluth Police, officers responded to the 100 block of W 1st Street at around 2:15 a.m. on Friday on reports of gunshots and a possible stabbing. When police arrived they say they found a woman who had been injured.
The woman was taken to an area hospital, where she was pronounced deceased. According to the report the woman had died from a stab wound to the neck. Her name has not being released pending notification of family.
A short time later, a man arrived at a hospital with a gunshot wound. The man left the hospital against medical advice. Investigators said it’s unknown if this man is related to the original incident.
The 100 block of W 1st street remains closed at this time. Officers have been seen going into the Kingsley Heights apartment building.
Mayor Roger Reinert issued a statement Friday morning saying violent crimes and gun violence is unacceptable in our community.
“I want to extend my condolences to the loved ones of the victim in today’s early morning homicide. Any loss of life in our community is tragic, and loss of life as the result of violent crimes is unacceptable. Further, gun violence of any kind in our community is unacceptable,” Reinert said. “We will have all means at our disposal to find those responsible for this tragic incident and hold them accountable for their actions.”
Duluth Police Chief Mike Ceynowa said law enforcement has been focusing on ways to keep downtown Duluth safe.
In a statement Chief Ceynowa said, “The Duluth Police Department has been actively working on increasing safety measures to keep downtown Duluth safe. This includes increasing foot patrol and working with our businesses to ensure safety is all of our priority.”
Chief Ceynowa said his department has made “significant changes in our approach to the area of 1st St. and N 1st Ave W.” starting in September 2022. “These changes resulted in a 53% reduction in violent crime between Quarter 4 2022 and Quarter 4 2023. DPD will continue to work with our business partners to address behaviors in this area. We will not tolerate violence in our community.”
