A Mesabi East grad is being honored with the Extraordinary Service Award from St. John's University.

Evan Mattson has had a busy four years of college at St. John’s University. The Mesabi East grad is getting ready to graduate with a degree in political science.

“Education is so important to me. It’s about helping people find what they are excited about, right?” he shared with us on Wednesday.

In between studying, he’s been on numerous service trips to places like the Bahamas and El Paso. He also went to Dubai for a climate change conference.

Another one is coming up in Rwanda in May. This will be for a year, and he’ll be teaching.

He’s also been a Resident Adviser for three years. His father died by suicide in 2009, so he’s aware of making sure everyone is ok.

All of this has lead up to earning the Extraordinary Service Award from St. John’s. He’ll receive it on Monday at a banquet with his family there.

He’s also being inducted into Phi Kappa Beta, a prestigious honor society.
