Duluth to open annual road sand collection sites

As residents begin their spring clean-up, the City of Duluth will have road sand collection sites available in various locations starting this weekend. The public is being asked to pick up sand and salt left from the winter to help keep area streams clean. Remember not to sweep or rake road sand or other materials into the street or ditches.

Large roll-off dumpsters labeled “Road Sand Collection Site”are placed in five disposal locations
throughout the city. The disposal dumpsters will be available for use from April 22 to May 10.

• Piedmont Community Center
• Duluth Heights Community Center
• Chester Park
• Portman Park

City officials say Duluthians have averaged 15 tons of road sand being dropped off at collection sites annually.

City workers and street sweepers collect road sand from the streets as early as possible in the spring, but the community can also help by clearing the boulevards, sidewalks, curbs and gutters. City officials say street sweepers collect an average of 6,000 tons of road sand from city streets annually.

Residents can also choose to “Adopt a Storm Drain” near their homes. You will receive a welcome packet with a small yard sign showing that you are participating. You can even name the drain. Residents can sign up to Adopt-a-Drain in Minnesota at https://mn.adopt-a-drain.org/

Yard waste and brush can be disposed of at the WLSSD yard waste site.
