Justin Liles: Storm chances tonight and through the weekend

A cold front will move into the Northland late this afternoon and tonight. There will be a chance for showers and thunderstorms associated with the front. The chance will be over portions of northern Minnesota this afternoon, spreading southeast into northern Wisconsin tonight. Severe thunderstorms, capable of producing hail to half dollar size and damaging wind to 70 mph, are possible over portions of central into northern Minnesota.

The highest threat will be late this afternoon into early Saturday morning. In addition to the severe threat will be the potential for heavy rainfall. The biggest threat for heavy rain comes tomorrow evening and overnight in northern Wisconsin. Spooner already had 3” of rain earlier this week with more rain coming there could be some localized flooding in Wisconsin.

  • TONIGHT: A chance of showers, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 1am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 67. Breezy, with a south wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.
  • SATURDAY: A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 78. Northwest wind around 10 mph, with gusts as high as 15 mph.
  • SATURDAY NIGHT: A 40 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 57. North wind 5 to 10 mph becoming northeast after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 15 mph.
  • SUNDAY: A chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 65. Breezy, with a northeast wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.
  • SUNDAY NIGHT: A chance of showers. Partly cloudy, with a low around 52. Northeast wind 5 to 10 mph becoming northwest after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 20 mph.
  • MONDAY: A slight chance of showers before 1pm. Mostly sunny, with a high near 70. Northwest wind 5 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.
