Mini medical school hosted by University of Minnesota Duluth
The University of Minnesota Duluth Medical School hosted local high school students in a mini medical school on Friday. The event was put on by UMD Medical students and faculty.
This is the second year UMD has hosted this event. Vanessa Petrich, a first-year medical student at UMD, said the event is designed to show kids the fun in medicine, and that the medical field is for everyone.
“Medicine is something that is vital, and it is something that is very fun,” said Petrich. “It can be something that saves lives and brings a lot of joy to people lives.”
The students were able to work hands on at different stations, learning about different topics including first aid, labor and delivery, emergency bleeding care, how to view specimens under a microscope and what the heart looks like from an ultrasound.
Students also get to build their own first aid kit throughout the event.
