2024 Memorial Day Programs in the Northland

Many events will be happening this weekend across the Northland in honor those who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

Duluth:

Sunday, May 26
To commemorate Memorial Day, the Duluth State Veterans Cemetery will host a special ceremony with pre-ceremony live concert provided by the 34th ID Army Band. Official ceremony at 2:00 p.m. at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemeteries-Duluth, 4777 Highway 53 in Saginaw. The program will include military honor guards, music and a guest speaker. Due to the high number of attendees expected, the public is encouraged to bring lawn chairs and carpool if possible.

Monday, May 27
Gary New Duluth Veterans Memorial Day Ceremony at 9:00 a.m. at 701 Commonwealth Ave. in Duluth at the corner of Commonwealth Ave. and Stowe Street. Speakers include Mayor Roger Reinert and Mike Waldron, Marine Corp. veteran serving in Desert Storm and the Executive Director of the 23td Veteran. Refreshments will be served at the GND REC after the Ceremony.

Bishop Felton to celebrate annual Memorial Day Mass at at 10:00 a.m. at Calvary Cemetery, 4820 Howard Gnesen Road in Duluth. The Mass is outside and will be held near the columbarium structures. Please bring a chair or blanket to sit on and an umbrella if needed.

Veterans for Peace Memorial Day Alternative Observance from 11:00 – Noon at the Gichi-Ode’ Akiing Park in Duluth. The event is held to remember the sacrifices of military veterans without glorifying, justifying or promoting unnecessary wars.

Memorial Day Parade in West Duluth at 12:30 p.m. The annual parade along Grand Avenue in West Duluth features marching bands, floats, antique cars, motorcycles and military groups. Parade units line up on 59th Avenue West between Raleigh Street and Grand Avenue beginning at 10:30 a.m. The parade begins at approximately 12:30 p.m. It is coordinated by Duluth Women of Today. The parade route runs east on Grand Avenue from 59th Avenue West to Central Avenue, then south on Central Avenue to Ramsey Street, and east on Ramsey Street. Hermantown:

Monday, May 27 at 3:00 p.m.
Taps Across America in partnership with Taps for Veterans to honor fallen soldiers at Fleet Farm, 4165 Loberg Ave. Buglers will sound Taps at 3 p.m. The public is invited to attend.

Sunrise Funeral Home hosts their annual Memorial Day Service. 4798 Miller Trunk Highway.

Moose Lake:

Monday, May 27 at 10:30 a.m.
The American Legion welcomes everyone to the Memorial Day Program at the Moose Lake Community School auditorium. The Memorial Day Program is presented in collaboration with the Area Scouts, Autumn Voices, the Community Band and the American Legion Honor Guard. The public is invited to join the group as they drive to the Moose Lake Area Veteran’s Memorial Park where the traditional service will be conducted by salute to our fallen veterans at 11:30 a.m. Parking available on Arrowhead Lane, 7th Street and Birch Ave. John M. Tobin of Duluth will be the guest speaker.

Proctor Area

Monday, May 27 at 9:30 a.m.
The 102nd annual Proctor Memorial Day observance and program, sponsored by the Proctor American Legion Post 106, will be held outside of the Proctor Community Center. Inside incase of inclement weather The keynote speaker will be United States Coast Guard Auxiliary Division Chief Dave Anderson. McConnell-Modeen VFW Post 137 Tom Meadath will also speak. Sixty Proctor area service members will be honored for giving their lives defending the country as a member of the armed forces. A locomotive bell will ring once for each name read. Following the Proctor program, the American Legion Honor Guard will visit the six-area cemeteries to salute the departed.

Noon – Solway, Maple Grove Road
1:15 p.m. – Twig, Industrial Road, Grand Lake
1:30 p.m. – Pike Lake, Canosia
1:45 p.m. – Hermantown, Janzig 5345 Morris Thomas Road

Two Harbors:

Monday, May 27 at 10:00 a.m.
Community Memorial Day Progam at the Two Harbors High School. Hosted by the American Legion Post 109 and American Legion Auxiliary Unit 109. The event is free and open to the public. There will be a formal program in the auditorium, followed by a service to remember the Navy, Coast Guard, and Merchant Marine fallen at the Van Hoven Park (Edna G. area) at approximately 11:00 A.M. The program will conclude at the flag staff in the Veterans section of the Lake View Cemetery at approximately 11:45 A.M. where full military honors will be conducted. A free picnic luncheon will be offered at the American Legion Post after the program, with music and lunch sponsored by Lovin’ Lake County.
