A prescribed burn scheduled for Sunday near Tofte
The Superior National Forest Service plans to do another prescribed burn on Sunday, June 2 near Tofte, Minnesota. According to a release from the Superior NF, the Bandit Prescribed Fire unit is located in Township 60 North, Range 6 West, Sections 9 and 16, approximately 15 miles northwest of Tofte, along Forest Road 1287 or the Two Moose Trail.
Fire managers will monitor conditions before moving ahead with the burn. Temperature, relative humidity, and wind speed are a few of the parameters they will monitor.
Officials remind the public that unauthorized drones are unwelcome in the area. For safety of the pilots and firefighters, drones should not be used in the vicinity of the prescribed burn.
Over the past several weeks, fire managers within the Superior National Forest have implemented prescribed fire units to help reduce hazardous fuel build up and the risk of intense wildfire.
According to the Superior FN, the prescribed fire will not close any nearby recreation sites, roads, or trails. Smoke warning signs will be placed along the roadway if smoke begins to impact visibility for motorists along the Two Moose Trail and Lake County 7.
A public information officer is scheduled to distribute information tomorrow, Saturday, June 1 to residents in the Wilson Lake area.
Officials say smoke and flames may be visible during active burning and smoke may settle in low areas in the evening hours.
If near the prescribed fire unit following burning, please be aware of hazardous conditions like dead, burnt standing trees that could fall at any time. “The safety of the public and firefighters is always our number one priority. We only close areas when necessary and will only keep areas closed as long as needed to ensure everyone’s safety,” Patrick Johnson-Fire Management Officer added.
