Isolated storms this afternoon, potential for severe weather tonight

June 4: Severe weather possible

Scattered severe thunderstorms are possible between two and nine pm.

Dense fog will continue to impact portions of the Northland this morning before skies clear midday. A Dense Fog Advisory has been issued for Douglas, Pine, Carlton, and Aitkin Counties as well as central and southern St. Louis County and the North Shore, in effect until 9am.

Once the fog clears, the weather will be nice for a few hours before storms enter the region. A gusty southeast wind will keep temperatures in the 50s and 60s by the lake. Elsewhere, we will warm to the upper 70s and low 80s.

With this daytime heating combined with an incoming cold front, thunderstorms are likely starting this afternoon. There is a chance of scattered severe thunderstorms from 2 pm to 9 pm with a risk of damaging winds, large hail, and heavy rainfall.

Expected accumulations for this round of rain will be at least half an inch. Areas with weak thunderstorms will likely have 0.75-1”, and strong thunderstorms could easily bring 2-3 inches of rain to some areas. Because of the heavy rainfall Sunday night, there is an increased risk of flooding. A Flood Watch has been issued for areas from Brainerd through northern Wisconsin. This is in effect from 1 pm Tuesday to 1 pm Wednesday.

There is a chance of spotty showers tomorrow, but nothing severe is expected as the rest of the week will be cooler.
