Storm complicates rescue efforts for Boy Scouts in BWCA
A Boy Scout group called for help after their canoe overturned in the Boundary Waters, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office. It came in at 3:36 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon. Four kids and one man made it from Basswood Lake to an island.
The group also contacted Ontario Provincial Police. OPP notified the Lake County dispatch office that they had advised the group to stay put.
OPP said it would be on standby if their assistance is needed, but that because of the incoming storm, they would not be able to fly any help in by air.
Lake County rescue units were dispatched and USFS was contacted for assistance. However, due to the approaching storm front, they decided that for the safety of all, rescue crews would go in to assist the following morning.
Around 6 p.m. the Ontario Provincial Police said they had been in contact with the man and that the campers had been rescued and no longer needed assistance.
