A first for the William A. Irvin on Thursday, with a Change of Command ceremony taking place on the retired ore carrier.

The U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Duluth now has a new commanding officer.

Commander John Botti is now in charge. He relieves Captain Jarrod DeWitz, who lead the unit for almost two years.

In DeWitz’s final few weeks, he’s dealt with both the spill of fuel in Silver Bay and the serious problem with the Michipicoten taking on water.

He was praised for his exceptional leadership and willingness to find the right solution. His next assignment is in California.

As for leaving this role, and the people he’s come to know as family, he said it’s bittersweet. And he advised Botti and his wife to get a good pair of boots.

Botti is coming from an assignment on the Pacific coast. He told the crowd that he’s deeply honored to assume this role.

“I truly believe that the Coast Guard has one of the greatest jobs in the world. To save lives, protect the environment, and ensure the safety, security, and stewardship of our waterways and marine transportation system,” Botti said.
