Grand Rapids baseball miss their shot in the state semifinals, takes third in Class AAA

The Grand Rapids baseball team was unable to overcome the Mahtomedi Zephyrs in the Minnesota State Class AAA semifinals Friday, falling 5-3 at the Chaska Athletic Park.

The Zephyrs took the early lead with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. They would score again in the second, bringing the score to 4-0 Zephyrs.

The Thunderhawks would make their attempt to close the gap with one run of their own in the top of the third inning, and another in the top of the fourth, making the score 4-2.

Zephyrs would strike back with a single run in the sixth, giving them a 5-2 lead.

Unfortunately, the Thunderhawks would not be able to rally enough to take the lead in the seventh, only racking in one more point to complete the game 5-3. Zephyrs advance to the championship game.

The Thunderhawks would then defeat Benilde-St. Margaret’s 4-1 in the third place game. Grand Rapids finishes 2024 in third place in Class AAA with a 18-9 overall record.
