Isle Royale through Tom Haas’ lens

Isle Royale is an island in Lake Superior and photographer Tom Haas photographed it between 1967-1987.

Tom Haas spent years on and around Isle Royale, an island in Lake Superior.

Between 1967 and 1987, he documented the industry, land, and life on Isle Royale. He had shoeboxes full of thousands of negatives. They have now been digitized and printed in a book called “Isle Royale: A Photographer’s Circumnavigation.”

Haas used a studio camera from around 1900.

“It’s a different tool,” he said. “And at 20 pounds, it’s kind of massive.”

He carried it in a 1960s canvas backpack that can fit the camera and a few sheets of film.

“But you don’t sneak up on moose,” he said. “And that’s what the Park Service wanted me to do, essentially. They said, ‘Go out there and get us some nice moose picture.'”

The black-and-white photographs are organized by location.

“So if you were to go to Isle Royale and wanted to have a hiking or paddling trip, this would be what you would see as you went around from site to site,” Haas said.

Haas’ book is for sale at the Glensheen Mansion, Bookstore at Fitger’s, and the Zenith Bookstore.
