Driver arrested after nearly hitting squad car head on, then damaging another squad
A serious high speed situation on the Range from Thursday.
Authorities said a 24-year-old man nearly hit a squad car head on, on Highway 37.
During a traffic stop, authorities learned Kaleb Sandy had active warrants out of Crow Wing County.
He then reportedly fled at a high rate of speed through Hibbing on Highway 169 towards Chisholm.
The St. Louis County Sheriff’s office said then he drove erratically in the construction zone on 169, intentionally running cars off the road and striking construction barrels.
He also reportedly nearly hit a construction crew working near Buhl.
Then, authorities said he struck a barrel, which then launched into the squad of a pursuing deputy, and went through the windshield. The deputy had very minor injuries.
Finally, near Walmart in Mt. Iron, Sandy’s vehicle hit a crossover, and that disabled his truck. He was arrested.
New charges are pending. Since there were active warrants out for Sandy, WDIO has released his name in this story.
