Justin Liles: Storms return with heavy rain late Thursday
It turned out to be a nice day even though we had winds off the lake. It wasn’t a great beach day like yesterday, but it was warm enough and dry enough to help get rid of a lot of standing water. Other than a stray sprinkle along the International Border and Arrowhead through sunset this evening, no rainfall is forecast in the Northland through Thursday afternoon.
An incoming low-pressure system over the Dakotas Thursday night brings increasing moderate (0.5 to 1″) to locally heavy (around 1.5 inches) to mainly northeast Minnesota late Thursday night and into Friday morning. The heaviest rainfall ends Friday afternoon from west to east before isolated severe thunderstorms may build into north-central Minnesota Friday evening. Large hail around the size of a quarter in diameter and wind gusts to 60 mph are the primary hazards. The rest of the weekend looks to be on the drier side with the potential for some afternoon showers to pop up Saturday.
