Becoming a lumberjack with the Minnesota Forest History Center

Up in Grand Rapids, Minnesota the Forest History Center is teaching guests what it was like to be a Minnesotan Lumberjack.

Up in Grand Rapids, Minnesota the Forest History Center is teaching guests what it was like to be a Minnesotan Lumberjack.

It only takes a horse ride to their logging camp until you are transported to the 1900’s.

The lumberjack season would usually take place in the winter time do to the fact that ice roads enabled them to move close to 50,000 pounds of logs. White Pine was what they focused on in the area around Grand Rapids.

A medium-sized camp like the one at the Forest History center had about 24 horses and 80 men. At the center you can see the replica buildings that they have like the Bunk House, the Kitchen, and you can also climb the 100-foot fire tower.

There are also more than 5 miles of trails at the Forest History Center that connect to the National Scenic Trail, which spans the country coast to coast, as well as the city trail system of Grand Rapids.

This July the Forest History Center hosting Be a Naturalist Day, where kids can come and get involved in all kinds of nature activities. That’s July 27, 2024, 10am – 4pm.
