Justin Liles: Heat, Haze (wildfire smoke), and Isolated Storms

July 8th: More heat this week

More heat this week

There has been increasing coverage of thunderstorms and showers. Pea-size hail remains possible. Rain showers and storms currently moving through the Arrowhead, northern Wisconsin, and I-35 corridor. In the mid evening, storms and rain showers will begin to dissipate. Showers and storms will leave the area in the late evening. Our next precipitation free day will not come until Thursday.

Beginning later this week, above normal temperatures are expected and are favored to continue through mid to late July at least. This means high temperatures in the 80s and 90s with overnight lows in the 60s. This level of heat affects most individuals sensitive to heat, especially those without effective cooling and/or adequate hydration. Heat Advisories may be needed for the Brainerd Lakes region. We are also going to have to consider wildfire smoke too.

With continued northwesterly flow aloft, some smoke from wildfires in northern Alberta and British Columbia may come across the Northland this week. This could lead to hazy skies and slightly elevated AQI (Air Quality Index). Currently, no unhealthy air quality is forecast by MPCA (Minnesota Pollution Control Agency) or WI DNR.
