Update: Two teens hit, one killed in Coleraine early Monday
The Minnesota State Patrol and authorities in Coleraine are investigation a fatal accident that happened early Monday morning. According to the State Patrol website, two teens were walking on Highway 169 when they were hit by a vehicle traveling south.
The update from authorities is that Dakota Jones, 14, died from her injuries. The family of Dakota has orgainized a GoFundMe page to help with funeral costs. According to that page, Dakota was a student at Greenway.
The other person walking, Aubrey Martin, 13, was taken to Essentia-Health St. Mary’s Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
The driver and passenger in the car were not hurt.
According to the State Patrol, the teens had been walking on Highway 169 just before 1:30 a.m. on Monday when an 18-year-old driver in a Chevrolet Monte Carlo traveling southbound, hit them near milepost 309 in Coleraine. The report says both victims landed in the southbound lanes of Highway 169.
Assisting at the scene were the Itasca County Sheriff’s Office, Grand Rapids Police Department, Trout Lake Fire Department and North Ambulance.
