Fresh and in season: Kohlrabi, basil, and peppers
Learn about the bounty of fresh vegetables this season from SoulFed Farms
Northland farms are harvesting produce, and Liz Strohmayer of SolFed Farm brought in a few of the freshest items from her field.
Kohlrabi, basil, and peppers are in season in the fourth week of July.
Strohmayer jokes that kohlrabi looks like “a little alien vegetable.”
“Kohlrabi is pretty interesting,” she said. “It’s got sort of just a – I wouldn’t say bland, but just a pretty neutral flavor to it. You can eat the leaves and the bulb.”
Her family eats the bulb raw or roasts it. The leaves they throw in salads or sauté them like spinach.
“The flavor is crunchy like a radish, but it doesn’t have a spice,” Strohmayer said.
SolFed Farm is part of the Clover Valley Farm Trail, which opens every Sunday from 12-5 p.m. Ten local growers participate.
