Lake Superior Zoo gets two new sand cats
The Lake Superior Zoo has received two new residents from the San Diego Zoo; sand cats name Tony and Pumpkin. The two male cats will be housed at the Griggs Learning Center.
“Sand cats are native to Africa’s Sahara desert, the Arabian peninsula and parts of central Asia,” explained Caroline Routley with the Zoo. “They prefer a very dry, arid habitat with little vegetation. They make burrows in the sand where they retreat when temperatures become extreme.”
Routley said sand cats primarily eat small rodents and are known snake hunter. They can also survive weeks without water.
