Photo gallery looks at Duluth’s past

The Duluth Depot is a local historic landmark known for housing local historic artifacts –from locomotives to indigenous art.

Now, thanks to an exhibit of period photography, The Views of Duluth, visitors can get a look into what the city looked like long ago.

In some cases, it’s a similar view to the present day, including photos of landmarks Duluthians will find familiar – such as the Lift Bridge, Central High and of course, the lake shore.
However, while some of the landmarks are recognizable, they still look a bit different – a view of the bridge that was replaced by Lift Bridge for instance.

Other photographs in the exhibit capture a city no longer in living memory – buildings and a way of life lost to time.

According to the St. Louis County Historical Society, which is running the gallery, many of the exhibited pictures are from the collection of local photographer Hugh McKenzie.

The gallery is currently on display on the fourth floor of the depot, just above the Great Hall. It’s open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and runs through the end of August. More information is available on the Historical Society’s website.
