Duluth duo sets out for Lake Ontario by power boat

A couple guys from Duluth set out early Wednesday morning on the fishing trip of a lifetime.

Dave Nelson and Greg Christenson pushed off in their Lund power boat onto the St. Louis River, bound for a trip through the Great Lakes to Lake Ontario.

“The Great Lakes is pretty much home to us. And we’ve fished all of them now. And the last one was Lake Ontario,” Nelson said. “So we were talking, you know, we need to get a walleye. And Bay of Quinte is one of the most world-renowned walleye fisheries.”

They originally planned to trailer a boat up there. But one thing led to another and they decided, why not get there by boat?

“If you look at our route from here, across Lake Superior, through the Soo Locks, across the north channel of Lake Huron, Georgian Bay Lake Huron, we’re going over some of the best freshwater fishing in the world,” Nelson said.

But the goal is simple: Catch a walleye in the Bay of Quinte on Lake Ontario.

They’ll stay in hotels or camp along the route. It’s expected to take them three weeks. They already dropped off a truck and trailer in Tenton, Ontario, to make their way back to Duluth afterward.

Nelson and Christenson have been planning for two years now, and besides the scenery, they’re looking forward to meeting people along the way.
