Rebuild of Veterans Memorial Hall planned after water damage

Damage update from Veterans Memorial Hall

A look at the plans for repairs after water damaged Veterans Memorial Hall.

Water damaged Veterans Memorial Hall at the Depot last month, and it remains closed for now.

Another tenant in the building noticed the water on the evening of July 10th. There was some standing water in the display. Now they need new flooring and new lower walls.

“We are very fortunate the historic items and the donations and materials veterans entrusted in our care were largely undamaged,” shared Nick Jensen, Executive Director of the St. Louis County Historical Society.

Some of the artifacts are on display in other parts of The Depot. For example, the large 20-star Civil War era flag now greets you at the main entrance.

Ron Hein, the treasurer of the St. Louis County Historical Society, said, “Everyone who walks in the door has the chance to see it. It’s one of the positives that’s come out of the water disaster.”

Work has already been underway for a new Medal of Honor exhibit for the hall.

Jensen added, “We have an opportunity to not just build back the space to what it was, but look at the stories and the content we share, and really take a big step forward with that,” Jensen added.
