“Tip-A-Cop” event raises money for Special Olympics
Local law enforcement gathered on September 11 for a charity event at Duluth’s Texas Roadhouse.
Called Tip-A-Cop, the event was a joint fundraiser between the restaurant, the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Department, the Duluth Police Department and Special Olympics Minnesota.
For part of the event, uniformed officers from the agencies assisted restaurant staff and visited with customers – seeking “tips” – money to be donated to the Special Olympics.
Sergeant Adam Kleffman from the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office has been involved in Special Olympic fundraisers like these for over a decade. He says folks at events like these are happy to help.
“It’s been phenomenal. We’ve got all the tables are full in there, everybody is having a good time. I’ve even line danced already for donations; it’s been great.” Kleffman said, adding that it’s an opportunity to impact the community beyond his regular duties.
“It’s my chance just to give back to the community, help out Special Olympics. I’m a huge sports fan, these athletes are amazing.”
Money raised goes to pay for things like food, lodging, and event costs for the organization, something the athletes appreciate.
“I enjoy how people come support us, because it gives us donations for equipment, for sports, and it also gives us money towards going to state tournaments.” Said Kelsey, a special Olympics athlete who competes in events like basketball, track, and floor hockey.
Kelsey and other athletes joined police officers and volunteers at the event. Nancy Lane has been involved with the Special Olympics for nearly 25 years. As both a volunteer and the mother of an athlete, she loves to see events like these where folks can support the cause.
“It’s just wonderful. Special Olympics changes our athletes’ lives, our families’ lives, the volunteers’ lives, and it’s such a thrill for me to see the community stand behind us.” Lane said.
