Go apple picking at Duluth’s public orchards
Duluth’s public orchards are open for picking.
For about the past decade, Duluth Parks and Recreation staff have been intentionally planting different varieties of apple trees in public spaces for anyone to pick.
“We have 16 locations where you can find a variety of apples from crabapples you might use for jams to very sweet apples that you want to just pick off the tree and eat,” Megan Lidd said.
Some apples may be past their prime, but Lidd suggests using the interactive online map on the Edible Duluth page to see where there are trees and which varieties you might find.
“We put out some blue signs in those apple areas. And so especially the ones that are more for eating on the spot or taking home to make a pie, we’ll put out those signs that say that this is a public orchard,” Lidd said. “Within that, there’s also a QR code that will link right to that website.”
Lidd also wants people to know that Duluth Parks and Rec has year-round programming, including the upcoming Pumpkin Palooza, Glow Hike, and Howl-o-ween.
