Brewery Creek Housing Apartments brings a new affordable housing option to Duluth

With Monday’s grand opening of the Brewery Creek Housing Apartments in Duluth more affordable option has become a reality.

“Personally, I want to live in a community where those of us that have an abundance of resources and privilege are willing to make investments that don’t just benefit ourselves, but the broader community, especially the most vulnerable members of our community. And I think that this project is the perfect illustration of that coming to fruition,” said Ryan Jones-Casey, Board Chair of One Roof Community Housing.

The new apartment complex is located in Duluth’s Hillside neighborhood, and the Brewery Creek offers fifty-two one- and two-bedroom units.

The project was created by One Roof Community Housing and is aimed at young adults who have faced homelessness.

“I think the most important thing is that stability creates a place for which to dream and to make everything else good happen in life,” said Jennifer Ho, Commissioner of Minnesota housing.

“I think that what we can do in a building like this is guarantee that the rents are going to be affordable to the incomes of the folks who live here, because we don’t all, you know, we don’t all make the same amount of money. And that’s what this building will do,” said Ho.

Rent ranges depending on the size and style of apartment, the lowest monthly rent for a two-bedroom unit set at approximately $850, and income and eligibility restrictions do apply. Ten units are reserved for members of the Fond du Lac tribe, honoring their contributions to the project.

“We’re here to make people’s lives better. And the way we do that is by making housing possible for folks in our community. Because we know if folks don’t have housing, if they don’t have a good safe place to be, it’s very, very hard to put one step in front of the other and go to work in the morning, to go to school in the morning, to do all the things that we do as humans, to be as self-actualized as we can be, to give back to the community and make it work, right? That’s why we’re here,” said Jeff Corey, executive director of One Roof Community Housing.
