Lea Zmurko: Warm winds with plenty of afternoon sunshine

October 2: Sunshine returns but cool down ahead

The rollercoaster of temperatures continues with low 70s and sunshine today, but back to cool fall conditions tonight and tomorrow.

Some clouds and light rainfall moved eastward across the Borderlands this morning. Rain accumulation is sparce, as most of the region is dry at the surface.

The Northland is still dry and breezy.  Today will be mostly sunny as skies clear due to a southerly wind. The elevated breeze of 15-20 mph will continue to pull warm dry air up north and temperatures will climb into the low 70s by the late afternoon.

The dry, windy and warm air creates near-critical fire weather conditions for parts of central Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin today.

The warm conditions will be short lived as a cold front arrives tonight and cooler temperatures will stick around through the rest of the week. Winds will also weaken as they turn to a northwest flow following the front.

We are still waiting for rain to help relive the widespread dry conditions, a large system is expected to pass across the Northland Saturday night with a slight chance for thunderstorms.
