Sen. Klobuchar calls for aid for the IV fluid shortage caused by Hurricane Helene

Following a pause in production of IV Fluid from the nation’s largest supplier, U.S Senator Amy Klobuchar calls on U.S Department of Health and Human Services to aid in the IV fluid shortage.

The shortage comes after Hurricane Helene caused flooding in Baxter International’s main factory in North Carolina.

Baxter International says distributors and customers are getting 60% of the normal levels of IV fluid since the disruption.

Senator Klobuchar expressed concern for a separate IV fluid plant in Daytona Beach, Florida as Hurricane Milton approaches.

“To address the potentially life-threatening shortage of IV solutions, I urge the Department of Health and Human Services to use all of its available authority to mitigate this devastating situation which threatens patient care, the work of medical and provider staff, and our emergency response readiness,” wrote Senator Klobuchar. “In addition to using your authority to address this shortage as quickly and safely as possible, I urge you to coordinate with the Federal Trade Commission and Department of Justice to prevent the distribution of counterfeit IV solutions.”

This is one of several efforts Senator Klobuchar has made to aid over the counter and prescription drug shortages.
