Entrepreneur Fund propelled forward with big donation and Distinction Awards
The Entrepreneur Fund is taking a big step forward with a recent donation from renowned philanthropist MacKenzie Scott and its upcoming Distinction Awards.
Scott donated $9 million, a sum of money the Entrepreneur Fund called a “game-changer.”
“It was a wonderful unexpected surprise,” CEO and President Shawn Wellnitz. “We got a phone call and outreach. We didn’t apply. But Entrepreneur Fund was selected through what they call a ‘quiet research process,’ so we really don’t know how they found us.”
Wellnitz said they know the EFund fit the criteria of being financially stable and having a proven track record and strong team. They’ll use the funds as leverage for more capital and matching funds and going deeper on current initiatives.
Nine local businesses will be recognized with Distinction Awards for business excellence in industries like manufacturing, food and beverage, and healthcare.
“We really love to recognize business owners who demonstrate an area of excellence,” Wellnitz said.
A selection committee looks at entrepreneurs who can back up their success with data and meet the Entrepreneur Fund Mission Test, which means they bring economic diversity or community vitality.
“It means a lot to them,” Wellnitz said. “They don’t often get kudos for the vitality they bring, whether it’s the job creation or the community benefits. They’re usually the first to give to others: their staff, their employees, the community, and so we like to recognize them for what they’ve done.”
The Distinction Awards go from 4-9 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at the DECC.
