UMD football stunned by Northern State for second straight loss

UMD football had only ever lost to Northern State twice before in program history, but Saturday marked a third, as the Bulldogs fell 24-21 due to a made field goal with time expiring.

The Bulldog offense couldn’t find their groove for much of the game, putting up just one touchdown in the first half, coming from a Kyle Walljasper pass to DaShaun Ames as time expired. The touchdown cut the halftime lead to 14-7.

In the second half, the UMD defense held strong, allowing just one touchdown, in conjunction with the Bulldog offense finding its momentum, as Walljasper and running back Derrick Johnson both scored from the one yard line to tie the game at 21.

Jeremy Caruso knocked in the game-winning field goal for Northern State as the clock hit zeros, a brutal blow for UMD as they lost their second straight game.

The Bulldogs will fight to get above the .500 mark next Saturday at Sioux Falls.
