Exploring firefighting at the Superior Fire Department’s annual Open House
On Saturday, despite the rainy weather, community members connected with the Superior Fire Department during their annual open house.
“It’s just an opportunity for the community to come out and see what we do here at the fire department in kind of a non-emergent way. So, people aren’t calling 911 to see us. They’re able to come and see their Superior firefighters, see how we live, see the trucks we work on, get some demonstrations. And it’s just a more relaxed, fun event,” said Superior Fire Department Battalion Chief Joe Tribbey.
The event opened the door for kids to learn more about firefighting an create new dreams of potentially becoming a firefighter themselves.
“They may see somebody that looks like them, that they can be a firefighter or something along those lines,” said Tribbey.
The Superior Fire Department doesn’t just cover fire emergencies, they also offer other services to the public.
“We have a drone program; we have two drones that we operate in emergency situations; we have a fully equipped hazardous material team, rescue abilities and things like that. So, we try to showcase things outside the norm that people may not know that we do,” said Tribbey.
With recent dry conditions and burn restrictions, the event provided an extra opportunity for the department to help the community prevent fire emergencies.
“So, anytime we can get the fire prevention message out, it’s important. That’s the biggest way we’re going to reduce fires is through prevention. With our recent dry weather, that’s also another message that we can get out,” said Tribbey.
