STARBASE launches new scholarship program

Another opportunity for young people to get support for furthering their education in STEM fields.

The advisory board of STARBASE Minnesota, Inc. – Duluth proudly announces that it will offer a STEM scholarship starting with the senior class of 2025. These students were among the first groups of students to attend programming at the STARBASE facility in Duluth.

The scholarships are $1000 each, and there are five available. Winners will be announced on May 1st, 2025.

“The scholarship is something we have been thinking about ever since our first fifth-grade students came through our doors in 2017,” says Lucas Mistelske, Board Chair for the STARBASE Minnesota, Inc. – Duluth advisory board. “Now those students are entering their senior year and might be considering a STEM career based on their experience at STARBASE. Our STEM scholarship aims to empower aspiring students who will become the next generation of the STEM workforce.”

The scholarship application period is currently open and will be accepting student applications through April 1, 2025. Students must have attended a STARBASE Minnesota-Duluth sponsored program such as the 5th-grade class experience, STARBASE Explorers, or Code Quest Summer Camps.

“What is really exciting about this scholarship is that students are able to use the funds to pursue a variety of STEM pathways, whether that is through a trade school, four-year college program, or other STEM-related certification program,” says Lori Hoyum, Vice Chair of the STARBASE advisory board and chair of the alumni committee. “The scholarship can be put toward tuition costs or be used to purchase books, equipment, tools, or other materials students may need for their education or training.”

STARBASE Minnesota, Inc., is a 501(c)3 non-profit and gives all students the opportunity to develop essential STEM skills, including students who may be underrepresented in STEM fields. This scholarship has been made possible by the generous contributions of the STARBASE Minnesota, Inc. – Duluth Advisory board, corporate partners, and individual donors.

STARBASE has provided a list of a variety of fields of study or occupations that may be considered STEM pathways applicable for the scholarship.
