Prep girls hockey: CEC tops Moose Lake Area, Grand Rapids/Greenway can't protect home ice

Prep girls hockey is now well underway in the Northland. Tuesday, two 2023-2024 Section 7A semifinals teams in Moose Lake Area and Cloquet/Esko/Carlton (CEC) matched up, with the Lumberjacks winning 4-1. Also in Grand Rapids, Grand Rapids/Greenway was struck down by Bemidji 6-4.

For the CEC Lumberjacks, three goals in the first period set the tone for a fiery offensive output. Reese Kuklinski scored just 51 seconds into the action, followed by Emma Morton roughly four minutes later. To cap off the first period scoring, Hadley Carlson found the back of the net.

Hallie Klavu put Moose Lake Area on the board in the second period, but CEC’s Allie Jones sealed the deal with an empty net goal in the third.

The Rebels look for their first win of the season on Thursday against North Shore while CEC tries to make it two straight wins when they take on Bloomington Jefferson on Saturday.

In Grand Rapids, the Grand Rapids/Greenway Lightning were locked in an offensive battle. Down 2-0, Haylie Forrest found the back of the net, and that allowed the Lightning to kick things into gear. Mercury Bischoff scored twice in the third period along with a goal from Abby Skelly, but defensively, Bemidji put up four more goals to put GRG away.

The Lightning look to bounce back on Eden Prairie on Friday.
