Lake Superior College honored to host memorial service for beloved art instructor and her son
One week after the news of their deaths filtered through the community, a moment to reflect and start healing for Lake Superior College.
Kat Ramsland was a beloved art instructor at LSC. She and her son Oliver were shot and killed by her husband.
LSC was pleased to help the family honor Kat and Oliver’s memory during a memorial service on Thursday afternoon.
President Patricia Rogers said, “We have people coming tonight who worked with her years ago, former students, current students. It’s really going to be truly a celebration of her life.”
Rogers said Ramsland loved to organize the student art show.
Wendell Greene was one of Kat’s current students. “She was the energy in the room,” he said. “One of the things that our class specifically is talking about doing is ensuring that her legacy continues. We want to try to incorporate her in whatever our favorite mediums are, whether we’re drawers or designers or poetry writers or novelists.”
Another co-worker, Cary Komoto, the Dean of Liberal Arts and Sciences, added, “Her dedication and her willingness and her love of being in there with the students was just evident.”
Police believe Ramsland’s husband, Tony Nephew, also shot his ex, Erin Abramson and their son, Jacob. They have said that he had a history of mental health issues.
