Trees of Hope and MOCA: Koren’s story

Trees of Hope MOCA: Koren’s story

A look at how a teenager is now living her best life after beating ovarian cancer.

Koren Sjelin is now a sophomore at Denfeld High School. She just wrapped up her first season on the dive team. And she works in the nursery at her church on Sundays.

We met the 15-year-old two years ago, when she was overcoming a rare form of ovarian cancer.

Now, life has gone back to normal. And instead of trips to the hospital, she’s gone on a cruise in Europe, and a Make-A-Wish trip to New York, where she got to swim with sharks!

MOCA, the Minnesota Ovarian Cancer Alliance, has helped support Koren and her family on this journey.

“They’ve done so much for me, gifts, support, and free clothes,” she told us. “I’m very thankful.”

“She just lights up, when she gets to see somebody she’s connected with before,” Crystal Sjelin said. She’s Koren’s mom.

The two attended the Light Duluth Teal Gala in September. And the Social and Shop at maurices in July.

Her father, Matt Sjelin, said, “There’s a lot of gratitude, for the opportunity to get back to something more normal.”

Our Trees of Hope phone banks are coming up tomorrow at 5, 6, and 10pm. Money raised will go towards MOCA. You can also donate now online.
