Lea Zmurko: The ‘calm’ before the next snowstorm

December 3: Cold continues

. Snow will start this afternoon and continue overnight, and an increase in winds speed will make for hazardous commute as blowing snow will reduce visibility.

A chilly morning ahead of the incoming snow. Winds will push in from the southwest ahead of the clipper as temperatures remain in the upper teens and low twenties.

Snow will being this afternoon and cross eastward through the Northland. The heaviest snow will fall at the tip of the Arrowhead where up to 4-7 inches can be expected. Elsewhere the region will see 1-3 inches, and lake effect snow will continue to fall onto the South Shore through Thursday morning.

 A cold front will bring up the rear of the system and with gusty cold air, snow squalls will be possible in northern Minnesota. This will make for hazardous conditions tomorrow morning with reduced visibility and snow on the roads. Temperature will be 15 degrees below normal and winds will exceed 20 mph with gusts upwards of 40 mph.

Today

A chance of flurries before 8am, then a chance of snow, mainly after 2pm. Cloudy, with a high near 24. Breezy, with a southwest wind 5 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Tonight

A chance of snow or flurries before 4am, then a chance of flurries between 4am and 5am, then a slight chance of snow after 5am. Mostly cloudy, with a temperature rising to around 24 by 3am. Breezy, with a southwest wind around 15 mph becoming northwest after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Wednesday

A 30 percent chance of snow, mainly before 9am. Patchy blowing snow after 9am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 26. Windy, with a northwest wind 15 to 25 mph, with gusts as high as 40 mph.

Mostly sunny, with a high near 18. Blustery, with a northwest wind 5 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.
