An Iron Range color for the Minnesota Gophers

Debuting on Friday, December 13th, the Minnesota Golden Gopher men’s hockey team will go grey. The Gopher’s have worn a variation of maroon, white or gold jerseys for decades. Now, according to the Minnesota Gophers Men’s Hockey X page, the team will be sporting new ‘Taconite Grey’ jerseys.

According to their social media post, this is an Iron Range Alternate. It is a tribute to the gritty, hardworking culture that embodies the Minnesota Iron Range.

When they refer to the legendary talent from the area, John Mayasich likely tops the list. The Eveleth native holds many state and college level records, and went on to win a gold and silver medal for Team USA in the Olympics.

The Men’s Gopher Hockey slogan is “Representing every corner of the State of Hockey.” The Gopher’s (15-2-1) face off against the Michigan State Spartans (12-2-0) on Friday and Saturday.
