Trees of Hope and Safe Haven: How your donation can save a life
Safe Haven is a nonprofit organization that helps protect people escaping domestic abuse. It serves a seven-county area in Northern Minnesota including St. Louis, Koochiching, Aitkin, Lake, Carlton, Itasca and Cook counties.
They provide a lot for individuals and families escaping scary situations, providing them with living essentials, education, and other services to a wide variety of people seeking protection.
“We work with around 1500 folks per year at the shelter,” says Shelter Director Ethan Powers. Who emphasizes a small donation can go a long way.
He says, “We’re always in need of donations… we do hear all the time from our guests that just having the basic supplies and a place to be helps them stabilize and get to the next stage.”

Safe Haven has been around for 47 years now and Resource Center Director Heather Drees says they’ve done a lot of good work in the long run.
“I mean we just had a situation happen about a month ago where somebody called in and they were like ‘I’m buying a house. I’m moving out of my current housing. I stayed at the shelter I utilized the Resource Center services and now I just want to give back.’ And they were donating some things but also were able to share just the great life they had built… it really helps us know that the work is being impactful and it’s helping people,” says Drees.
