Beyond the Playbook: Mercury Bischoff cements herself as Minnesota girls hockey legend

This past weekend, Grand Rapids/Greenway girls’ hockey’s Mercury Bischoff inched her way closer to Minnesota state history, with the 200th goal of her career.

Bischoff brings thunder to the Lightning, skating on their varsity team since she was in seventh grade. Now a senior, the forward is tied for sixth most career goals in Minnesota state history surpassing 200. When you score that many goals, sometimes you lose track.

“I knew I was around there a couple games ago, but when I scored it I was confused on why they took the puck because I forgot about it, but after they told me what it was I was told that not many people have reached that,” said Bischoff.

Starting with the Lightning in the 2019-2020 season, Bischoff has become almost a celebrity in the area.

“She kind of transcends hockey in Grand Rapids,” said Brad Hyduke, the Grand Rapids/Greenway head coach. “People gravitate to her, they show up to watch her, youth kids ask for autographs. Not every high school athlete gets that opportunity.”

Bischoff’s college commitment came in September of 2023, and while many fans were hoping Bischoff would be theirs to root for, her commitment to MSU-Mankato keeps her in state.

“When I went there for an official visit I loved the girls, the community, I wanted something small-ish like Rapids but something a little bigger, so that was the perfect spot for me,” shared Bischoff.

While Bischoff keeps lighting the lamp, her teammates are right behind her as well. The Lightning are off to a hot 7-3 start, with their eyes set on bigger and better things.

“We have this great senior group, we’re excited for where we’re going this year and what the possibilities are,” said Hyduke. “We’ve been in some section finals and haven’t been able to get that step further, I think that’s a goal for Mercury and for this team, and that’s setting the goal for this program and the rest of the youth program. They can make that a goal to not only do what she did off the ice but to see the accolades for the team and herself on the ice is pretty special, the attention it brings to the hockey community here.”

As of Tuesday, Dec. 17 Bischoff leads the state in scoring with 28 goals, and sits second in points with 42.
