Justin Liles: A strong winter storm will make Thursday travel difficult

December 18th: Difficult Thursday Travel

Difficult Thursday Travel

It’s looking likely that most of the Northland including the Twin Ports will see our first big accumulating snowfall event this winter. The National Weather Service has the majority of the region under a Winter Storm Warning beginning at midnight tonight and lasting through Friday morning. A broad swath of moderate to heavy snow is expected for much of the region. Most of the snow will fall in 12 to 18 hours from early Thu AM through the afternoon. The snow is likely to be light and fluffy. This will make it much easier to remove the snow for snowblowers, plows, and shovels. It won’t be your back breaking snow.

Road conditions won’t be the greatest Thursday. Make sure to monitor road conditions before heading out and doing any traveling. Most of the region is likely going to see anywhere from 2-6” of snow. There will be less the farther you move north and more the farther you go south. Locally heavier amounts are expected around the Twin Ports, North Shore, and Bayfield Peninsula due to lake and terrain enhancement. There could be some localized pockets of 8” or more along the higher terrain with in about 15 miles of Lake Superior.

Please keep in mind that amounts will vary over short distances around the big lake. What’s even more interesting is how much snowfall we get. Should snowfall amounts exceed 6.6” at NWS Duluth, this will be the highest amount of snow that we have seen in one day since the Blue Blizzard of December 2022. This is remarkable. Warmer weather and quite conditions return for the weekend and Christmas Holiday.
