UMD men’s & women’s hoops lose OT heartbreakers to Winona State
Overtime was not kind to either the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) men’s or women’s basketball teams on Wednesday night. Both Bulldog clubs fell to Winona State University late in OT at Romano Gym.
The UMD men’s team fell 72-71 off two last second Warriors free throws. The Bulldogs came out to a hot start, at one point leading 21-4, and ended the first half up 32-22. They even held a 62-60 lead with 12 seconds left in the game, thanks to a Caleb Siwek bucket, but Winona’s Luke Haertle drained a buzzer beater layup to force extra time. He also scored the game winning free throws. Charlie Katona led UMD with 21 points, while Haertle led Winona also with 21 points.
This marks UMD’s first loss at home this season. Falling to 7-4 overall, they will close out 2024 Saturday, December 21 visiting Concordia University, St. Paul at 3 p.m.
The UMD women fell 67-65 to Winona, falling to 4-7 on the season. Scoring just nine points in the first quarter, the Bulldogs rallied to lead 30-29 at halftime. In the fourth quarter, Myra Moorjani hit the game-tying free throw to make it 55-55 and force overtime, but the Warriors never gave back up the lead. Johanna Miller led UMD with 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Hailey Markworth led the game with 27 points for Winona.
UMD (4-7) also closes out their 2024 slate visiting Concordia-St. Paul Dec. 21. They tipoff at 1 p.m.
