ATV goes through the ice on St. Louis River
Authorities from multiple agencies spent time Thursday recovering an ATV that went through the ice on the St. Louis River.
Crews were dispatched to the area of the river near Spirit Mountain. Its unclear how long the ATV was in the water before authorities arrived.
First responding crews worked their way across the ice to look for anyone in distress, only finding footprints leading away from the ATV toward land. Authorities say around 12:00pm Thursday, they learned a man was captured nearby on security footage that matched the description of the ATV’s registered owner. Authorities were able to make contact with the owner.
The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office is reminding everyone to use caution on any ice this time of year, as ice conditions and thickness can vary.
“We would also like to stress that if you find yourself in a situation like this, please call 911 and advise us, so we aren’t tying up a large amount of emergency resources searching for you when an event is reported,” said the Sheriff’s Office in a press release.
Crews with the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office, Duluth Police, Duluth Fire, St. Louis County Rescue Squad, the US Coast Guard, and Mayo Ambulance were all dispatched.
