Hoyt Lakes man saved by CPR and AED

A look at how deputies saved a co-worker's life last fall with CPR and an AED.

A training turned almost tragic for a St. Louis County Sheriff’s deputy back in September. Scott Garrick remembers having some chest pain, and then he blacked out.

Thankfully, his fellow deputies and other first responders sprang to action.

With a combination of CPR and seven shocks with an AED, they kept him going until the ambulance arrived.

The five members of the St. Louis County Sheriff’s office who did their part were honored with a 911 Lifesaver award on Tuesday.

“Despite the fact that he was one of our own, who we’ve worked with, they clicked right into operational mode,” shared Investigator Matt Miranda, who had organized the training that day.

Essentia Health donated the AED that deputies used to save Scott.

He was only 37-years-old at the time of his cardiac arrest, and underwent heart surgery to remove blockages in his arteries.

Dr. Nicole Worden did the surgery, and is glad that Scott is healthy again.

“You look at life differently,” Scott added. He’s back to work, and enjoying life as a husband and father as well.

February is American Heart Month.
