MArch is Minnesota Foodshare Month

Local news, sports, weather presented by the WDIO News Team

March is Minnesota FoodShare Month, a time when organizations, businesses, faith communities, and individuals come together to keep 300 food shelves statewide stocked throughout the year.

The Duluth Salvation Army has set some big goals. They’re hoping to collect 5,000 pounds of food and raise $20,000.

It comes as the non-profit sees more and more need in the community. “We have seen record numbers of participants coming in for food shelf services, and there was one month last year where we had to close the food shelf before the end of the month because we ran out of food,” said Cyndi Lewis, Community Engagement Director at The Duluth Salvation Army.

“In 2024, the average number of households coming to our food shelf every month was 112. So far this year, the average per month is 308! There’s nothing sadder than having to turn people away when they are in desperate need of the basic food staples for their families. We could use the support of the community to help feed the many families in need.”

Additionally, those who have certain dietary needs may find themselves paying more for certain foods. The Salvation Army has a medical food shelf you can add to. They need products with low sugar, low sodium, and protein along with gluten-free.

Donations go even further during FoodShare month, making now through april a great time to give,
