CSS golf shares tips to transition from indoor practices to outdoor courses

This spring the College of St. Scholastica (CSS) golf team has been fighting to get into the swing of their season, now on week 13 of indoor practices due to poor weather and course conditions.

Days of hitting off mats inside then presented a new hurdle. The Saints have to make sure they break out of habits formed in indoor practices that don’t translate onto grass courses, but they do have a few tricks up their sleeves.

"This is pretty typical with golfers when you hit off mats consistently, once you get outside you tend to chunk the ball," head coach Rachel Gray explained. "So we talk a lot about how do we avoid chunking the ball."

"One of the tips that Rachel teaches us is to hover your club off the ground in order to pick the ball up cleaner off the ground, instead of hitting more dirt underneath," sophomore Olivia Hanson explained.

Gray added that outside of training, scheduling transportation, booking hotel rooms, and even finding opponents has been rough.

The Saints teed-off in just their first Midwest match of the season last weekend. They will now close out their 2022 Spring card in the Yellowjacket Invitational this Wednesday at the Spooner Golf Club.
