Names released in officer-involved shooting Chisholm

On Friday, authorities released the name of the man who died during the officer-involved shooting in Chisholm. According to the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office, 38-year-old Michael David Johnson of Chisholm died of multiple gunshot wounds.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension also identified the three officers who discharged their weapons during the incident. Deputy Cody Dillinger and Officer Nick Grivna fired their department handguns. Deputy Gavin Nichols fired non-lethal foam impact rounds. All three are on standard administrative leave.

According to a press release from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, early Wednesday morning, police were looking for Johnson on multiple felony charges out of Morrison County. At 7:15 a.m. a deputy located Johnson’s unoccupied vehicle at his home in Chisholm.

Additional law enforcement arrived and attempted to bring Johnson into custody. According to the BCA, Johnson came out of the house with knives in his hands. According to the release, the BCA says officers fired less lethal rounds first, followed by lethal rounds. Johnson died at the scene.

No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident. The BCA crime scene personnel recovered two knives near Johnson’s body.

The BCA says the investigation is ongoing. The incident was captured on body-worn cameras and squad video recorders.

Deputy Cody Dillinger has been with the sheriff’s office for five years. Officer Nick Grivna has been with the Virginia Police Department for eight years, and Deputy Gavin Nichols has been with the St. Louis County Sheriff’s officer for six years.
