T-minus two days until the first shots ring out in the Minnesota firearms deer hunting season. The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) shares what you can expect in Northland woods.
“In northeastern Minnesota deer populations have struggled to recover from several severe winters and the winter of 2021 was indeed severe in many parts of northeastern and some parts of north central Minnesota. So, we have reduced harvest opportunities in some parts of this area and hunters may see lowered bag limits of the number of watery permits available has decreased the intention is to help deer populations recover here,” said Barb Keller, Minnesota DNR Big Game Program Leader.
Shooting hours each day are a half-hour before sunrise to a half-hour after sunset.
“Most common deer hunting violations are hunting over bait, probably the most common tip call that conservation officers receive. Secondly, would be trespassing, people hunting where they’re not allowed or going on private property when they don’t have permission,” said Adam Stennett, Minnesota DNR Conservation Officer.
Remember safety is key this season. Don’t forget to purchase a license and be aware of both other hunters and local laws.
