Lake Superior Youth Chorus celebrates 30 years

In Duluth, the lake superior youth chorus is celebrating their 30th anniversary. Educating kids from 3^rd to 10^th grade through the power of music.

Artistic Director Bret Amundson says, “It’s a really exciting thing! It’s big for any nonprofit to make it to 30 years. It shows the impact that a youth organization like this can have in our community.”

The chorus is currently made up 175 members and they just had their first big concert at the NorShor Theatre in the first week of November.

The concert acted as a preview for parents giving them an inside look at what their children will be learning throughout the season.

Speaking on the rehearsal process, Amundson says, “Having a youth arts organization is intense. I mean, kids here have to practice commitment, they have to practice self-advocacy, they practice leadership, and they practice teamwork.”

While in the chorus Amundson says they are learning other life lessons.

“Not only are they singing and making beautiful music, but they’re also practicing what it means to be a great community member”, says Bret.

The team says seeing the kids grow through the choir all the way to graduation is super special. Bret says, “As a director who gets to see someone and their growth from a third grader to a 10th grader, there have been many times when students are unrecognizable. They’re just these amazing leaders.”
