Sabrina Ullman: Focus will soon shift to the South Shore for lake-effect snow

Accumulating snow will continue tonight, especially for the higher terrain of the Arrowhead. The good news is that winds will shift tonight, giving the North Shore a break from lake-effect snowfall. The downside is that the winds will become westerly overnight briefly before shifting to be northwest on Thursday. This means that the focus will turn to the South Shore by Thursday night.
Most of the Northland will only have an additional inch of accumulation on Thursday, but areas close to the shore in Iron, Gogebic, and Ontonagon counties will have an additional 5-9” by the time winds shift Friday.
There is another chance of snow late Friday night, lasting into early Saturday morning. The South Shore will also have more lake-effect snow on Saturday.
Temperatures will stay below normal for the rest of the week. Tonight will be mostly cloudy with overnight lows in the upper teens to low twenties. Thursday’s highs will be in the twenties. Friday will be cold and blustery. Afternoon highs on Friday and Saturday will be in the teens, and a few areas may drop below zero early Sunday morning.
Tonight

A 30 percent chance of snow. Cloudy, with a high near 24. Northwest wind 5 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.
Friday
Mostly cloudy, with a high near 19. Breezy, with a west wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. A 30 percent chance of snow, mainly after 1am.
Saturday
Mostly cloudy, with a high near 17. Blustery, with a northwest wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.
Sunday
Partly sunny, with a high near 22. Breezy, with a southwest wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.
Monday
Partly sunny, with a high near 28. West wind 5 to 10 mph.
Tuesday
Partly sunny, with a high near 32. South wind around 5 mph.
