Over 300 rowers from twelve clubs throughout Minnesota, Michigan, and Manitoba, Canada were at Park Point Saturday competing in the 62nd Annual Duluth International Rowing Regatta.

The regatta featured twenty-nine men’s and women’s events in the junior, open, and masters age racing categories.

The regatta also marked the 100th anniversary of Duluth Walter Hoover winning the prestigious Diamond Sculls in rowing.

“His was a time when rowing was a popular sport, followed by people all over the world and you could read about Walter Hoover in newspapers from Berlin to London to New York to Tulsa, Oklahoma,” explained Longtime rower Mike Cochran. “The community leaders were really excited about this because they felt like would put Duluth on the map.”

Cochran said 65,000 showed up to greet Hoover at his homecoming from the overseas competition.
