Beyond the Playbook: Special Spartans join Superior football team

Football is a sport that touches people in ways well beyond the field. For the Superior Spartans football team they did just that by welcoming new kids with any, and all abilities, to the Superior Spartan Football Champions Camp on Monday.

The camp is an annual event set up by the Spartans to provide an awesome, unforgettable experience for students with special needs. The Champions Camp, for head coach Bob Demeyer, has a deeper meaning than just having fun.

"The idea is to just have a whole lot of fun, make connections with people, and give people opportunities that they may not normally have. To develop relationships and everybody learn from this event, its an awesome event and we have a whole lot of fun doing it".

Held for the second time, it marks a change of pace for the football team from the usual grind of the season, but one coach Demeyer thinks will be beneficial for his squad.

"Well, we talk all the time about reaching out and doing things to help other people and get people opportunities. While also looking for opportunities to serve other people. This is one of those things that we can do and our kids benefit just as much as any of the participants".

Participants worked their way through seven total stations, which included catching a pass from a Spartan quarterback, and even a touchdown drive.

"All the kids came, and it was fun doing activities with them, and it was just a great time. Being able to have a big family here, and friends it was just amazing," exclaimed Wyatt Cullwell, Junior Offensive Lineman for the Spartans.

The event looks to grow bigger every year, as future camps are open to any student with a disability from any school district, and will be back once again next fall.
